In the Australian healthcare system, patients generally cannot receive a Medicare rebate for standard osteopathic treatments. However, if you are referred by a GP, you may be eligible for a rebate under certain circumstances.
As part of the Chronic Disease Management (CDM) scheme introduced by the Australian Government, patients with a chronic or terminal medical condition (lasting 6 months or longer) may be eligible for up to five treatments per calendar year with an allied health professional, including osteopaths.

Your GP will include details of the treatments in your care plan, including the number of appointments prescribed and the specific allied health services recommended. These appointments can be for one service, such as osteopathy, or for a combination of services (e.g., three osteopathy sessions and two physiotherapy sessions). The number of sessions you are eligible for will depend on your GP’s professional opinion.
Once your GP has created the plan, you can make an appointment online by selecting “Medicare Initial/ Return Appointment” or by calling our clinic, where our friendly team can assist you in scheduling your appointment.
Your initial appointment will last 45 minutes, if you are new to the clinic or haven’t been to the clinic in the last 18 months. When you arrive, please bring your care plan with you, as your practitioner will need to review it.

Following your appointment, payment will be processed, and you will receive a rebate of $60.35* from Medicare.
If you have chronic pain and would like to see an osteopath please speak to your GP to determine if you are eligible for rebates under the Chronic Disease Management scheme.
