What Happens at Your First Osteopathy Appointment — and What to Bring

Blog

Starting anything new can feel a little daunting — especially when it involves your body and your health. If you’ve been thinking about booking your first osteopathy appointment but aren’t quite sure what to expect, you’re in the right place.

At Bodywell Healthcare in Mernda, we see first-timers every single day. Some arrive a little unsure what they’re in for. By the time they leave, most say the same thing: “They really listened to me and I feel like I am in the right place”.

Here’s a straightforward rundown of what happens, what to bring, and what to expect in the days that follow.

What Happens at Your First Appointment

Your first visit is a little longer than a standard follow-up. That’s because your osteopath takes the time to properly understand you — not just your main complaint, but the bigger picture of your health and lifestyle.

Initial consultation

Your appointment starts with a detailed conversation. Your osteopath will ask about:

– What’s brought you in — your main concern or area of discomfort
– How long you’ve had it and what makes it better or worse
– Your general health history, including any past injuries, surgeries, or conditions
– Your lifestyle, work, and daily movement patterns
– Any medications you’re currently taking

None of this is rushed. The more your osteopath understands about you, the better placed they are to help.

Assessment

Once the consultation is done, your osteopath will carry out a physical assessment. This typically includes observing your posture and movement, and gently assessing range of motion, muscle tension, and joint function in the relevant areas. You may be asked to perform a few simple movements — nothing strenuous.

Treatment

Treatment Bodywell

After the assessment, your osteopath will discuss their findings with you and outline an approach for treatment. Osteopathic treatment may include hands-on techniques such as soft tissue massage, gentle joint mobilisation, and stretching. Your osteopath will explain what they’re doing as they go, and you’re always welcome to ask questions or let them know if anything feels uncomfortable.

Before you leave, your osteopath will also provide:

– A tailored exercise program based on your individual presentation, to support your recovery at home
– Advice around work and home ergonomics, to help address any contributing factors in your daily environment

What to Bring and What to Wear

A little preparation goes a long way. Here’s what we’d suggest:

What to bring:
– A list of any current medications (or the medications themselves)
– Any relevant scans, X-rays, or reports (digital or printed is fine)
– Your Medicare card and any private health insurance card
– Referral letter if you have one (not essential, but helpful)

Your osteopath may ask you to remove some clothing so they can better see the areas they are working on and can also look for any changes in the skin. If you are uncomfortable removing your clothing please wear comfortable loose fitting clothing or shorts if you have lower limb pain.. Your comfort and privacy are always the priority.

How Long Does It Take?

A first appointment at Bodywell Healthcare is 45 minutes. This includes the consultation, assessment, and treatment.

Follow-up appointments are 30 minutes— as your osteopath will already have a solid understanding of your history.

What to Expect After Your Appointment

It’s not uncommon to feel a little sore or tender in the treated area for 24 to 48 hours after your first appointment. This is a normal response and usually settles quickly.

Your osteopath may suggest:

– Applying a heat pack or ice.
– Some gentle movement or stretching exercises to do at home.
– Staying well hydrated.
– Booking a follow-up if ongoing care is recommended.

Everyone responds differently, and your osteopath will give you guidance specific to your situation before you leave.

Bringing Your Baby or Child?

Around one in five of our patients is under six years old — so if you’re bringing a little one in, you’re in very familiar territory at Bodywell.

Paediatric osteopathy has a slightly different feel. Babies and toddlers are assessed and treated while they’re held, feeding, or even while they play — whatever keeps them calm and comfortable. The techniques used for children are gentle and adapted to suit their age and development.

Baby osteopathy Bodywell

It can be helpful to bring along:

– Maternal child health record (the green book)
– A copy of your birth notes
– Any other relevant medical information
– If your baby is bottle fed, please bring a bottle that can be prepared — we may ask you to feed your baby during treatment to help keep them settled

If you’re unsure whether osteopathy may be suitable for your child, feel free to give us a call before you book — we’re always happy to have a chat.
